During the last two decades, molecular, cell biological, and neurobiological investigations have revolutionized our understanding of the circadian system and underpinned its overall relevance for the control of body functions. The circadian system is involved in the control of many physiological processes including the sleep-wake cycle, blood pressure, body temperature, metabolism and cell cycle.

These discoveries have established chronobiology as a cutting-edge scientific discipline that provides us with an excellent basis to develop and establish a rational and systematic chronomedicine involving a broad range of clinical disciplines from psychiatry to oncology and social medicine.
