“Diving into Science” – the Robert Bosch Stiftung and Leopoldina launch a new seminar programme for journalists

Personalised medicine and genetic engineering are big topics in the news these days. But what does “personalised medicine” actually mean, and what are the opportunities and limits of genetic engineering? It is not only people who read news articles who are asking themselves these questions; the journalists who produce them are too. In order to equip readers and journalists with the information they need, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Germany National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina have set up a seminar programme for journalists called “Diving into Science”. Journalists attending the seminars receive insight into current research topics and learn about how scientists work.

Many topics from the world of science are of relevance to society. In the media, these topics quickly move from the science section of the newspaper to the business and politics pages. Journalists are increasingly addressing issues such as genetic engineering, demographic change and energy supply, without being experts on the subjects. The Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Leopoldina are keen to share their knowledge with these journalists.

Over a period of two years, the 15 participants of Diving into Science will meet regularly in seminars held by renowned scientists and respected science journalists. At the onsite sessions in research centres they learn how top level research actually works, discuss ethical considerations, and are introduced to some of the most important research tools. The seminar participants also receive a grant of up to €3,000 to enable them to educate themselves further outside the seminar programme.

The Robert Bosch Stiftung is one of the large company related foundations in Germany. It was founded in 1964 and continues the charitable endeavours of the company founder and donor Robert Bosch (1861-1942). The foundation focuses on international understanding, education and health.
